Overview

This unit will cover the following:

- Ideal linear op-amp circuits, such as inverting amplifier, non-inverting amplifier, summing amplifier, instrumentation amplifier, Wheatstone bridge;

- Non-ideal linear op-amp circuits;

- Phase-sensitive demodulation (within lab);

- Static limitations of op-amps, such as bias current, offset current, offset voltage;

- Dynamic limitations or frequency response of op-amps;

- Analogue filters, such as low-pass (including 2nd order Butterworth low-pass), high-pass, band-pass, notch and all-pass filters;

- Non-linear circuits, such as rectifier, phase-sensitive demodulator;

- Digital-to-analogue converters (DAC), such as ladder network;

- Analogue-to-digital converters (ADC), such as those based on dual-ramp and successive approximation methods.

Pre/co-requisites

Unit title Unit code Requirement type Description
EEEN10232 Pre-Requisite Compulsory

Aims

The course unit aims to:

- provide students with a solid foundation in the fundamentals of electronic circuit design used in engineering applications;

- equip students with the ability to analyse and design electronic circuits for practical engineering solutions;

- develop practical skills in building, testing, and troubleshooting electronic circuits in laboratory settings, using real electronic components.

Learning outcomes

ILO 1 - Design and then analyse ideal linear op-amp circuits, including inverting amplifiers, non-inverting amplifiers, summing amplifiers, instrumentation amplifiers, and Wheatstone bridges.

ILO 2 - Assess the static and dynamic limitations of the non-ideal op-amp circuits, including the presence of bias current and offset voltage.

ILO 3 - Construct and assess different types of analogue filters, including low-pass, high-pass, band-pass, notch, and all-pass filters, with a focus on 2nd order Butterworth low-pass filters.

ILO 4 - Design and then evaluate non-linear circuits, including rectifiers and phase-sensitive demodulators.

ILO 5 - Explain the operation of digital-to-analogue converters (DAC) and analogue-to-digital converters (ADC), including those based on dual-ramp and successive approximation methods.

ILO 6 - Implement and test op-amp circuits, analogue filters, and analogue/digital converters in laboratory settings to demonstrate theoretical knowledge and practical circuit design skills.
