Course details
Course description
Our BSc Biochemistry with International Study course will give you a grounding in a subject that forms the basis of virtually all the biological sciences.
You will learn about topics such as the structure of biomolecules, and how they interact in essential processes and pathways in our cells.
You will also study the actions of enzymes, and how they can be inhibited by drugs, as well as genetic engineering and molecular biology.
In Year 3, you will have the opportunity to study overseas to gain a broader perspective on the topics studied, enhancing your employability. You will take optional units[HR1.1][JS1.2], which will allow you to tailor your course around your interests and career ambitions. The application process for places at partner universities is competitive, and all opportunities will be subject to availability.
The year abroad is fully assessed by the host university. After your year at an international university, you will return to Manchester to complete the final year of your degree.

Foundation Year available
You can prepare for the full degree course if you do not have the appropriate qualifications for direct entry by undertaking our foundation course first.
Flexibility to transfer between courses
You can transfer between most of our bioscience courses at the end of your first year or, in some cases, later.
Teaching and learning
You will benefit from a wide range of teaching and learning methods that suit the content and aims of each course unit.
These range from lectures and tutorials to practicals and research projects, including the final-year project.

Coursework and assessment
Assessment methods vary widely to suit the nature of the course unit and each level of study.
- Lecture units are usually assessed by written exam (multiple choice or essay-based), which are held at the end of an academic semester in either January or May/June.
- Practical units are usually assessed by experimental report and/or short written assignment and/or written exam.
- The proportion of independent study assignments increases during each year of study.
There is also the opportunity to transfer from this course to one of the four-year courses, MSci or with International Study, at the start of Year 2.
Programme changes require a first-year average of at least 60%. The application process is competitive.
Year 1
Lecture units are usually assessed by e-learning activities during the unit and multiple choice exams at the end of the semester. Year 1 contributes 10% to your overall degree mark. You must achieve an average of at least 60% to be eligible for the with International Study programme.
Year 2
Lecture units are usually assessed by essay-based exam, and some units also include a coursework element. Year 2 contributes 30% to your overall degree mark.
Year 3
You will complete Year 3 in one of our partner universities. You will study bioscience-related course units, and depending on the options available at the partner university, you may also pursue some other subjects of interest. You will be assessed by the partner university and must pass all units studied. Marks obtained at the partner university will be recorded as pass/fail and do not contribute to the overall degree classification.
All opportunities to study at a partner university will be subject to availability.
Final year
Lecture units are usually assessed by essay-based exam. Students also take two honours papers: degree programme-specific examinations comprising essays and data-handling problems.
A significant part of the year is the project, which is assessed through a presentation and a written report.
The final year contributes 60% to your overall degree mark.

This course is modular. You will study compulsory course units and choose some optional units.
Most units are assigned 10 credits, and you will take 120 credits each year.

You will gain a broad introduction to biological sciences, covering key concepts such as:
- biochemistry
- genetics
- pharmacology
- molecular biology
In addition, you will study the aspects of organic, inorganic and physical chemistry that are relevant to biological systems.
Year 1 also introduces the essential data handling and laboratory skills required for all biological scientists.

Our modern teaching labs are equipped for a range of biological and biomedical techniques. The following are just a few of the techniques you could undertake during your degree:
- polymerase chain reaction (PCR);
- DNA sequencing;

- spectrophotometry;

Career opportunities
Our graduates go into a wide range of sectors. Around a third choose to work in scientific research and development, which may require significant postgraduate study, usually a PhD. They then secure jobs as researchers working in universities and pharmaceutical and bioscience companies and institutes.
Around two-thirds of graduates choose other career options such as teaching or communicating science, as well as careers unrelated to the biological sciences including management, finance, marketing and the civil service.

Entry requirements
A-level
AAB, including two of Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics (the Core Sciences).
If you are taking only one of the above Core Science subjects and an A-level in at least one of Geography, Psychology, Environmental Studies or Physical Education, we can consider you for an AAA offer. If your predicted grades are one grade below our minimum entry requirements, we may still make you an aspirational offer if you meet our contextual criteria.
Subjects with overlapping content are not normally considered as separate A-levels. For example, Further Mathematics is not considered alongside Mathematics, and Human Biology is not considered alongside Biology. If you are concerned there is too much overlap in your A-level subjects, please contact us for advice before applying.
Practical skills are a crucial part of science education and therefore will be a requirement to pass the practical element of any science A-level taken. Where applicants are applying for science and related degrees, this is likely to be made explicit in the offer you will receive.
Applicants taking A-levels are normally expected to offer three full A-levels. If you're taking more than three A-levels, these won't be included in your offer. We will only make offers consisting of three A-levels.
Duration of A-level study
If you have studied an advanced curriculum, where the examinations are spread over three years or more, please contact the academic School/Department for clarification on acceptability prior to applying. For some courses, offers will normally be based on three A-levels taken in the same sitting (normally within a two-year period).

Contextual offers are available for applicants who:
- live in the UK and will be under the age of 21 on 1 September of the year they will start their course; and
- live in an area of disadvantage or with low progression into higher education; and
- have attended a UK school or college for their GCSEs or A-levels (or equivalent qualifications) that has performed below the national average over multiple years.

International Baccalaureate
35 points overall with 6, 6, 5 in higher level subjects, including two science subjects, normally Biology and Chemistry.
If you are only taking one core science at higher level from Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics and Physics, you may still be considered if you take Geography, Psychology, or Sports, Exercise and Health Science at higher level in place of the second core science. In this case, the offer will be 36 points overall with 6, 6, 6 at higher level.
Applicants studying the International Baccalaureate Career Related Programme (IBCP) should contact the admissions team prior to applying, so that their academic profile can be considered.
GCSE/IGCSE
Applicants must demonstrate a broad general education including acceptable levels of literacy and numeracy, equivalent to at least Grade 4 or C in GCSE/IGCSE English Language and Mathematics. GCSE/IGCSE English Literature will not be accepted in lieu of GCSE/IGCSE English Language.
Please note that if you hold English as a second language IGCSE qualification, we may also require you to offer one of our acceptable equivalent English Language qualifications
or achieve a higher grade in your IGCSE than the one stated above. Please contact the admissions team in your academic School/Department for clarification.

English language requirements
All applicants to the University (from the UK and overseas) are required to show evidence of English Language proficiency. The minimum English Language requirement for this course is either:
- GCSE/IGCSE English Language grade 4/C or;
- IELTS 6.5 with no less than 6.5 in any component, or;
- An acceptable equivalent qualification.
Please note that if you hold English as a second language IGCSE qualification, we may also require you to offer one of our acceptable equivalent English Language qualifications or achieve a higher grade in your IGCSE than the one stated above. Please contact the academic School for clarification.

Additional expenses
The year studying abroad is an integral part of the course and must be completed. Some costs, such as tuition fees, are substantially lower. Other costs can vary and are not included in the tuition fee. For example, living costs may be higher or lower than the UK, and there are travel-related costs to consider, such as paying for a passport, visa fees, health insurance, and (if needed) vaccinations.
Policy on additional costs
All students should normally be able to complete their programme of study without incurring additional study costs over and above the tuition fee for that programme. Any unavoidable additional compulsory costs totalling more than 1% of the annual home undergraduate fee per annum, regardless of whether the programme in question is undergraduate or postgraduate taught, will be made clear to you at the point of application. Students participating in placements outside the UK may be able to apply for funding from the depending on eligibility. Priority will be given to students from low income households.

We would normally only consider applicants who obtained the relevant qualification within the three years prior to entry.
Applicants who have left education for more than three years would normally be recommended to take an Access course or exceptionally considered for the Foundation Year.

Home-schooled applicants
Non-standard educational routes
Mature students are some of our most well-equipped learners, bringing skills and attributes gained from work, family and other life experiences. Students come from a whole array of backgrounds, study every kind of course, undertake full-time and part-time learning, and are motivated by career intentions as well as personal interest. There is no such thing as a typical mature student at Manchester.

How your application is considered
Applications are considered on the basis of the UCAS form. Some candidates may be interviewed online or by telephone, or asked to complete an alternative admissions statement.
Deferrals
Applications for deferred entry are considered equally to other applications up to the point of confirmation. Deferred entry is granted at the discretion of admissions staff, and is normally granted for one year only and two years at the maximum. Some English Language test results, such as IELTS or TOEFL, are only valid for two years from the test date. Your English Language test report must be valid on the start date of the course.
Policy for applicants who resit their qualifications
The University will consider applicants who have re-sat individual modules. If you have re-sat your final examinations, we may consider your application in exceptional circumstances. We would generally require a minimum grade of an A for any subject being re-sat. Please contact us to discuss this before you apply.
Re-applications
If you applied in the previous year and your application was not successful you may apply again. Your application will be considered against the standard course entry criteria for that year of entry. In your new application you should demonstrate how your application has improved. We may draw upon all information from your previous applications or any previous registrations at the University as a student when assessing your suitability for your chosen course. If you are applying for a place for the same year of entry through UCAS Extra, you should provide additional evidence of your suitability for the course. If you are applying through clearing, you are required to meet the clearing requirements. In both UCAS Extra and clearing the places will be subject to availability.
